Kraków, Jagiellonian University, Collegium Novum

Kraków has been known as a leading academic centre in Poland since 14th century. The Jagiellonian University is the oldest higher education institution in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded on 12 May 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great. The Jubilee year 2014 marked the 650th anniversary of this remarkable event.

Collegium Novum

Collegium Novum is the main administrative and representative building of the Jagiellonian University. Located just a short walk from Kraków's Main Square and bordered by the greenery of Planty Park, it stands as one of the most recognizable and frequently photographed landmarks of the University.

The current neo-Gothic structure was completed between 1873 and 1887, based on designs by architect Feliks Księżarski, and opened to mark the University's 500th anniversary. Its elegant façade, inspired by the historic Collegium Maius, has since become a symbol of the institution's rich academic heritage.

Among its architectural highlights is the ornate avant-corps, bearing the coats of arms of the University, its founders, and benefactors. This feature, partly obscured by the historic oak of liberty, adds a distinctive charm and sense of tradition to the building.

Today, Collegium Novum houses the University's central offices and several lecture halls, including the impressive Aula—an assembly hall where the forthcoming conference will be held.
